Sam – Trainee Quantity Surveyor

Meet Sam. Sam discovered WiC via SECTA in Essex having seen the programme at a careers event put on by a local children’s centre. Sam is returning to work after her maternity leave having worked previously in retail.

After completing a 2-day training course to gain her CSCS card, Kirstie Forrester from WiC introduced Sam to Readie Construction Ltd where she joined the company on a work placement, two days per week, to explore the career opportunities available in Construction. Readie Construction was able to give Sam exposure to the health and safety, site management and commercial aspects of working within construction for a principal contractor. Sam instantly made a great impression and quickly identified her preferred route.

Readies went on to offer Sam a position as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, saying that they believed she would be a real asset to the team. Commenting on her WiC experience with SECTA, Sam said that it was “An invaluable service which has given me the support and guidance to enter the construction industry.” We wish Sam all the best in her new role!

Update: Sam has now been promoted in her role, from a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to Assistant Quantity Surveyor for Readie Construction.

Commenting on her promotion, Sam shared her exciting news;

“I am now procuring subcontractors for some of the bigger trades, which involves writing their contracts and negotiating pricing etc. I am also more involved with some of the client side of things such as helping with the environmental side of the project and the client requests. I now help with training the new trainee surveyor and showing him the ropes. Readie have been very reactive to Covid and have done everything they can to ensure a Covid safe work place. I am working from home most of the time, we have all learnt to adapt and Microsoft teams has been a great way to connect with people. Overall it’s such a great place to work and the support and learning has been fantastic.”
