Wasana – Mechanical Electrical Production

Wasana came to WiC through a referral from the National Careers Service. Having completed a Degree in Electronic Engineering, but with no experience in the industry and having had a career break to raise her daughter, Wasana was looking for support to increase her confidence, knowledge and prospects to gain employment in the sector.

Wasana completed her CSCS card with Clarion Futures and joined the Hill and WiC virtual work experience week in April 2021. As practical work placements were unavailable due to Covid restrictions at the time, Wasana joined a group of 16 women who gained further insight into production, commercial and technical opportunities available in housebuilding. The experience included Q&As with the Hill teams, interactive activities, and workshops designed to increase the participants’ knowledge, confidence, and pre-employment skills.

Following the virtual work experience, Wasana was connected by WiC to WiC members, Bouygues who are delivering the Cavendish III project in Cambridge for Cambridge University. Following a successful interview, Wasana was offered a 3-month paid opportunity to work with the Mechanical Electrical Production team. Wasana is pictured with Site Office Manager, Sam Mayo when WiC visited during her first week on-site.

Talking about the opportunity, Wasana commented, “ I felt very welcome the first day I arrived at Cavendish III site. People are friendly and welcomed me, it felt like home. Thomas, my mentor, is an Electrical Package Manager, and has taught me many important things. I am still learning to achieve my goals. I must thank for Women into Construction, especially, Shelley, for being supportive and for helping me to get this job.”

Shelley Lawrence, Project Manager for WiC Cambridgeshire adds, “Wasana was an integral part of the virtual work experience with Hill, encouraging and supporting other women in the group and participated in all activities assigned with energy and enthusiasm. I’m delighted that Bouygues have offered Wasana this opportunity and I look forward to seeing where Wasana’s career progresses.”
