- Work-placements are a useful way to gain industry experience in your chosen area of work. They are also a great way of demonstrating your skills to an employer. More than 50% of women that complete placements, progress into paid employment.

Silvana came to Women Into Construction (WIC) with a background in hairdressing and waitressing and an interest in construction. Many of her male family members were already working in the industry and she had a good understanding of the interesting, varied, and well-paid roles available. With a keen interest, but no previous experience of construction, WIC assisted her to gain the L1H&S qualification and her CSCS card, helped her to develop her CV, and then promoted her to Morrisroe for an apprenticeship opportunity on the Tottenham Hotspur stadium development. She was successful and is now a valued member of the formwork team on this prestigious new development.
“The apprenticeship has changed my perception about the construction industry as I know I can have a career in it and not just a job. I know that many women might not want to work in the construction industry, but I would say to give it a try. I’m loving it, and other women can too!
“It’s a challenging apprenticeship, but don’t be afraid as it’s very rewarding too. I started off being very shy, but now I really feel that I’m part of a team and I know that this is what I want to do.”
Karen Hall came to WIC with a HND in Aerospace Engineering and health and safety experience within a laboratory setting. She was keen to utilise her skills and extend her knowledge into a construction environment, and was studying for the NEBOSH National Certificate in Health and Safety. WIC supported her to gain the L1 H&S and CSCS qualifications, and sourced a work-placement for her within Crossrail’s health and safety team. Karen enjoyed her placement hugely, gaining both site and corporate office experience, enabling her to make the connection with corporate health and safety strategies and site implementation. On completion of her work-placement, Karen was offered a full-time position with the Crossrail team as an Assistant Health and Safety Advisor. She was delighted to accept this, and in this role, has developed Crossrail’s health and safety awareness programme and is leading on site audits. Karen is now providing mentoring support for other women following her work–experience route into construction.
